Ladies’ Night to rock in support of feminist group

April 1, 2015 - 20:08 By Korea Herald
Korean and expat bands will be rocking out in aid of women’s causes at Ladies Night next week.

Ten acts, including Guten Birds, Baekma and Oops Nice will be playing at the concert, which will support feminist community Disruptive Voices.

The first concert was held in January in support of Hollaback, an organization that campaigns against street harassment.

“It got started basically in response to what I had suddenly become aware of as a major problem facing a great many of my female friends in and out of Seoul,” said Shin Gi-yeon, the event’s organizer.

The show raised 1.3 million won for Hollaback, but the wider response was what encouraged Shin to hold another show.

“After volume 1, the response I received showed that empowerment and awareness were just as important as benefiting worthy organizations,” said Shin. “Moving forward, I have been seeking out various organizations that seek change for women’s rights in various ways.”

Shin says the third in the series will help Korea Unwed Mothers and Families Association, which helps unmarried mothers and their children.

Ladies Night Vol. 2 will be held at 5 p.m. on April 11 at Freebird 2 in Hongdae.
