[Graphic News] Alcohol consumption at home increases

Feb. 23, 2015 - 19:54 By Korea Herald

Alcohol consumption at home reached a record high last year while tobacco consumption decreased, according to data.

Statistics Korea said the average monthly spending on alcohol consumed at home by two or more people reached 11,267 won ($10.16), a 4.8 percent increase from the previous year and an all-time high. Alcohol

consumption at restaurants and bars was outside the scope of the survey.

The average monthly consumption of alcohol in the home has steadily increased since 2004, mainly due to the reduced alcohol content in soju and increased demand for wine and import beer.

On the other hand, the average monthly spending on tobacco in 2014 was 16,573 won, a 4 percent decrease from the previous year.

The continued decrease appears to be due to people smoking less for health reasons, analysts said.
