Ex-nat'l security chief named as Seoul's new envoy to China: source

Feb. 15, 2015 - 14:13 By KH디지털2
A former national security adviser has been tapped as South Korea's new ambassador to China for his extensive experience in the field of security and diplomacy, a source said Sunday.

Kim Jang-soo, also a former defense minister, will replace Amb. Kwon Young-se, according to the source.

It will mark the first time that an official with a military background has been tapped to be Seoul's ambassador to China since 1992 when Seoul and Beijing established diplomatic ties.

The 67-year-old Kim had served as the national security advisor from March 2013 to May 2014 after working on security and diplomacy affairs on the transition team for President Park Geun-hye, who took office in February 2013.

He served as the defense chief from November 2006 to February 2008 under the administration of late liberal President Roh Moo-hyun.

"Kim's appointment is seen as reflecting a need to further promote cooperation with China in terms of peace and security in Northeast Asia," the source said.

The source added that South Korean Ambassador to Russia Wi Sung-lac is also expected to be replaced soon.

The source did not disclose who will replace Wi, but said a senior official from Seoul's foreign ministry is likely to take up the post. (Yonhap)
