Founded in 2009, Ewha Womans University Cancer Center for Women in Seoul has established itself as the go-to place for women’s cancer patients at home and abroad.

The institution, a special unit of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital, is known for its treatments for women’s cancers, including breast reconstruction which can be performed immediately after a mastectomy.

Since its establishment, women’s cancer patients from 60 different countries have visited the hospital for treatment. The hospital is known for its efficiency and gender-specific medicine ― a new way of looking at how diagnosis and treatment of disease differs as a function of gender.

For example, those who receive breast cancer surgery can avoid waking up to the trauma of losing a breast in the process of completely removing the cancerous tissue.

On top of being one of the few hospitals that follow the principles of gender-specific medicine, the institution is also equipped with the latest cancer screening technology, including the digital 3-D Tomosynthesis Mammography.

The hospital is headed by doctor Paik Nam-sun, who was the first surgeon in Asia to perform breast-conserving surgery ― which involves removing the least possible amount of breast tissue when removing the cancer ― back in 1986.

“We will continue to do our best in education, research and treatment to become one of the world’s most competitive hospitals that specialize in women’s cancers,” said Paik.
