The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning has selected Daegu as the home of a “software quality promotion center,” which is to be built as part of its project to develop the capability of the local software industry.
The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Software Quality Promotion Center will be operated by the Daegu Digital Industry Promotion Agency under the administrative support of Daegu City. The center will set up the infrastructure and support system to offer services for strengthening the quality of local software products.
The Daegu-Gyeongbuk area has a high growth potential for its software fusion industries, such as embedded software, mobile software, software confusion products, machines and materials. Moreover, its geographical location offers the advantage of being the base of the software industry. However, the need was great to establish a local facility for testing software quality as the area lacked testing technology and facilities, which are necessary for quality improvement.
The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Software Quality Promotion Center is expected to provide added value to the local industry and, thereby, contribute to making the software industry a new growth engine of the local economy.
To this end, the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Software Quality Promotion Center will offer diverse services to local software companies, including tailored consultations concerning software quality; software product testing; support related to certification of software products, such as SP (software process) and GS (Good Software), public campaigns to promote the awareness of the importance of software quality; and the supply and spread of open software products.
The center will also establish cooperative networks with the Software Engineering Center of the National IT Industry Promotion Agency and existing local software quality centers (Chungchoeng, Honam and Dongnam area centers) to set up a wide network for software quality. Such a network will contribute to the heightening of the quality of the software products of small- and medium-sized companies and their competitiveness and increase the domestic and international sales of software products produced by local firms.
Choi Un-baek, director of the Creative Economy Headquarters of Daegu City, said, “The city will develop the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Software Quality Promotion Center into an organization that will bring reliability, stability and competitiveness to the local software technology and products. By doing so, we will heighten the competitiveness of local software companies, which are still behind their counterparts in Seoul and its vicinity.”
