Hospital fires surgeon for operating under the influence

Dec. 1, 2014 - 15:47 By 정주원
A university hospital decided on Monday to fire a doctor who reportedly carried out a sloppy operation on a child patient while under the influence of alcohol.

Gacheon University Gil Medical Center took the disciplinary action against him in an emergency meeting. The hospital also decided to punish some of its senior officials for poor management of its staff.

The embattled doctor is a first-year resident of the hospital’s plastic surgery department, with one year of experience in the emergency room.

“Dismissal is considered the most severe punishment that a hospital can impose on its staff,” an official of Gil Medical Center was quoted as saying.

The disciplinary action came after the outraged parents of a 3-year-old girl claimed that the drunken doctor executed a flawed operation on their daughter.

The patient had been taken to the Gil Medical Center’s emergency room after slipping and falling on a wet floor, and hurting her chin on Friday night. After the drunken doctor faultily stitched her wound, the girl had to undergo follow-up treatment by a different doctor, according to news reports.
