A South Korean comedy-action film has topped the local box office for the second weekend in a row, exceeding the 7 million viewers’ mark, a market tracker said Monday.

“The Pirates” remained in the No. 1 spot of the weekend box office, drawing 620,912 moviegoers in 682 theaters around the country last weekend, according to the Korean Film Council.

It was closely followed by the Hollywood blockbuster “Into the Storm,” which attracted 613,146 viewers in 585 theaters.

“The Pirates” topped the 7 million viewers’ mark on Sunday, the 26th day after it opened on Aug. 6.

Set in the early times of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the movie tells the story of a quest by bandits and pirates to recover a missing royal seal from the whale that swallowed it.

The mega-hit Korean history film “Roaring Currents,” which portrays Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s dramatic victory over Japanese naval forces during the same era, slipped a notch to No. 3, with 333,099 viewers. The movie has drawn more than 16 million viewers since it opened on July 30, setting a sales record in the country. (Yonhap)
