South Korea will field its largest-ever Asian Games delegation when it hosts the quadrennial competition next month, officials said Wednesday.
The Korean Olympic Committee said South Korea will have 1,068 athletes and officials at this year’s Asiad, to run from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4 in the western metropolitan city of Incheon.
There will be 831 athletes competing in all 36 sports, along with 237 officials, the KOC added.
The previous record for the Asiad delegation was set at the 2010 competition in Guangzhou, China, where South Korea had 1,010 athletes and officials.
Incheon is the third South Korean host of the Asian Games, after Seoul in 1986 and Busan in 2002.
South Korea has finished second, behind China, in the medal tables at each of the past four Asiads.
Its stated objective is to win at least 90 gold medals to once again finish second behind China and fend off Japan.
Park Soon-ho, head of the Korea Sailing Federation, will serve as the chief of the delegation. (Yonhap)
