A provincial governor apologized Sunday on Twitter after his son was accused of beating a subordinate and sexually harassing another one in the military.

The eldest son of Nam Kyung-pil, a five-term ruling party lawmaker who was elected governor of Gyeonggi Province in the June 4 local elections, is under investigation for allegedly hitting his subordinate in the stomach and face on a number of occasions since early April, military officials said.

The son, a corporal, is also accused of sexually harassing another subordinate, touching him inappropriately, they said. All names were withheld. The incidents reportedly took place at a military unit in Cheorwon, 88 kilometers south of Seoul, in Gangwon Province.

Officials said the corporal admitted to the beatings but is denying the accusations of sexual harassment, saying he was only being "playful."

"I bow my head in apology to the soldiers and their families for the wrongs that my son committed during his military service," Gov. Nam wrote on Twitter.

"My son will be duly punished according to the law, based on the investigation results," he said. "As the father, I will repent with the mind that I, too, am being punished." (Yonhap)
