유병언 추정 사체 발견 소식이 전해진 가운데 현장에 있던 그의 소지품들 역시 주목을 받고 있다.
전남 순천 경찰서는 22일 오전 기자회견에서 "순천 송치재에서 발견된 변사자의 지문을 채취해 검색한 결과 유병언 지문으로 확인됐다"며 "아주 부패돼 변사자 지문을 채취하기 어려웠지만, 변사체를 냉동실에 안치한 뒤 변사자의 우수시지 지문 1점을 채취해 검색한 결과 유병언 지문으로 확인됐다"고 전했다.
경찰은 변사체의 DNA가 그간 검·경 수사활동으로 이미 확보한 유병언의 DNA와 일치한다는 국립 과학수사연구원의 감정결과를 구두로 통보받았다고 밝혔다.
또 경찰은 유병언이 신던 신발이 '와시바'라는 고가의 명품으로 밝혀졌다고 발표했다. 그가 입고 있던 옷도 고가의 이탈리아산 '로로피아나'로 확인돼 유병언일 가능성이 높은 상태다. 현장에는 구원파 계열사에서 만든 스쿠알렌 병도 발견된 것으로 알려졌다.
앞서 22일 검경에 따르면 전남지방경찰청은 지난달 12일께 순천 송치재 휴게소에서 2.5km 가량 떨어진 매실밭에서 부패된 남성의 시신을 한 구 발견했다. 경찰은 무연고자로 보고 시신의 신원 확인을 위해 엉덩이뼈 일부를 떼어내 DNA 분석을 의뢰했다.
DNA 분석결과 유병언의 친형 병일(75·구속기소)씨 DNA는 물론 검경이 이미 확보한 유씨 DNA와도 일치한 것으로 알려졌다.
사체 발견 당시 주변에는 소주병과 막걸리병 등이 흩어져 있었던 것으로 전해졌다. 사체는 발견 당시 겨울용 점퍼에 벙거지를 쓴 채 하늘을 바라보고 누워 있었던 것으로 알려졌다. 반백골화가 80% 가량 진행된 상태로 정확한 사망 시점은 아직 확인되지 않았다.
시신이 발견된 장소는 유 전 회장이 머물렀던 순천 송치재 별장으로부터 2~3㎞ 거리에 위치, 10분 정도면 이동이 가능하다.

Police confirms Sewol owner Yoo Byung-eun’s death

Police confirmed Tuesday that a dead body, found by a farmer in a city in South Jeolla Province on June 12, is that of the capsized ferry Sewol owner Yoo Byung-eun.
Investigators verified identification of the body though fingerprints comparison and DNA samples from the body, Suncheon Police Station chief Woo Hyung-ho told a news briefing.
Woo said the fingerprints coincide with that of the 73-year-old runaway and DNA samples approximately match those of his older brother, Byung-il. The older Yoo had been taken into custody for allegedly pocketing funds from affiliates of Chonghaejin Marine Co., the operator of the ill-fated ferry.
Woo admitted that police had been somewhat negligent in looking into the body when plum field owner notified the investigative agency of the body in early June.
Though the body was delivered to a hospital in Suncheon right after the farmer’s report, a lock of hair from the corpse was found to have been left in the field for more than a month as police, then, allegedly failed to verify the body’s identification due to heavy decay.
Police and the prosecution said they are waiting for the final view from the National Forensic Service, which is conducting a DNA test on the body.
Investigators at that time referred DNA samples from the body to the state forensic agency in an ordinary manner to identify of the corpse.
Insiders raised the feasibility that investigators could have regarded the body as a simple elderly resident in the provincial district.
Investigators had reportedly told the plum farm owner that the body “seemed to be an ordinary homeless person.”
But law enforcement agencies -- reportedly unexpectedly -- were informed of the intelligence by the National Forensic Service late Monday that the body could be Yoo.
In early Tuesday, the hospital handed over the corpse to the Seoul unit of the National Forensic Service, whose headquarters are located in Wonju, Gangwon Province.
“Should the forensic agency further reiterate its research position that the body is Yoo, the prosecution is expected to halt its full-fledged effort to indict him,” an investigator said.
Some netizens are denouncing the prosecution for not securing the body immediately after it was found by the farm owner in early June. The prosecution, which saw the initial warrant for Yoo expire, again asked the Incheon District Court to issue a second arrest warrant on Monday, vowing to capture him in the coming months.
Yoo has been suspected of glossing over the risks of overloading the Sewol vessel with freight early this year, even though the ferry had a weakened ability to recover left-and-right balance when turning, due to a renovation that added more cabins to the vessel.
