Korean won’s volatility eases in second quarter

July 17, 2014 - 20:44 By Korea Herald
The intraday volatility of the South Korean currency declined in the second quarter compared with three months earlier as the won’s appreciation stoked caution among investors, central bank data showed Thursday.

The average intraday change in the Korean won came in at 3.7 won in the April-June period, compared with 4.9 won in the previous quarter, according to the Bank of Korea

The day-on-day change also fell to 2.5 won in the second quarter from 3.8 won three months earlier, with the average day-on-day volatility during the quarter reaching 0.24 percent, the eighth-lowest among 15 currencies used by Group of 20 countries. The average day-on-day volatility among the G20 currencies also eased to 0.28 percent in the second quarter from 0.41 percent three months earlier.

The BOK credited the won’s eased volatility to the currency’s appreciation, which prompted caution among investors. An overall fall in global market volatility was another factor, it added. (Yonhap)
