Korean firms rank in global top 10 in nine industries

South Korean companies were ranked in global top 10 in nine industries last year, CEO Score, a local company information provider, said Sunday.

The researcher tracks corporate management data, based its results on global sales.

Nine industries where South Korean companies ranked in the global top 10 based on sales included smartphones, home appliances, shipbuilding, semiconductor, automobiles, steel, auto parts, shipping, and communications, the company’s data showed.

Samsung Electronics, the country’s biggest family-run conglomerate, came on top in household appliances like TVs, monitors and white goods, followed by another South Korean firm LG Electronics, according to CEO Score.

Samsung took the global top post in overseas sales of home appliance. The tech giant’s sales of home appliances last year came to $48.2 billion. Samsung was also on the list for smartphones and semiconductors.

In shipbuilding, Hyundai Heavy Industries took the top spot with $51.9 billion. POSCO placed No. 2 in the steel industry.

For automobiles, Hyundai Motor and its sister company Kia came in 10th in the auto industry, although they ranked 5th in volume of car sales. In auto parts manufacturing, Hyundai Mobis was No. 6.

Meanwhile, cosmetics, logistics, pharmaceuticals and Internet companies were laggards by comparison, the data showed. (Yonhap)
