Former music professor cleared of forgery

June 5, 2014 - 18:20 By Korea Herald
Police have ended their probe into allegations that a former music professor of Seoul National University faked his educational background, local media reported Wednesday.

The professor, surnamed Park, had been accused of falsely claiming that he had graduated from a prestigious music school in France. He has also been accused of sexually harassing a female student and giving illegal private lessons for high fees.

The school removed him from his post last month after investigations by its ethics committee concluded that most of the accusations are true. Park publicly denied the charges.

Gwanak Police Station dropped the fake degree charge against Park after Interpol confirmed that he did graduate from the school.

It is unclear whether Park will regain his post at the college of music at Korea’s top university, currently suffering from a shortage of faculty due to its scandal-ridden hiring process. The school failed to hire a new professor in February after being accused of favoritism from one of the incumbent professors.

While Park has been removed from his post, he has not yet been replaced.

The Education Ministry is currently moving to restrict convicted sex criminals from working at colleges for 10 years after they have served their sentence. The move came after a female college student was forced to take classes taught by a professor who was convicted of sexually harassing her, causing an uproar among human rights activists.

The sexual harassment allegations against Park were not formally registered with the police, so there are technically no regulations preventing him from returning to campus.
