Hospital fire kills 21 in S. Korea
A fire broke out at a sanatorium in southern South Korea early Wednesday, killing 21 people and injuring seven others, police and fire officials said.
They said six of the injured were in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could rise.
Firefighters extinguished the fire at the sanatorium's annex building in about 30 minutes, said Kim Kyong-man, a fire official.
Still, choking fumes filled the building, which they said is to blame for the heavy death toll.
About 10 patients on the first floor escaped soon after the fire started, but some 30 patients on the second floor were exposed to toxic fumes, according to the officials.
Most of the patients were in their 70s and 80s, and were bedridden due to Alzheimer's disease, stroke and other diseases. A single nurse was on duty in the annex building in Jangseong, a small county some 300 kilometers south of Seoul.
The nurse is among those dead, according to Kim.
The accident is the latest deadly fire to hit South Korea in recent days.
On Monday, seven people were killed and 41 others were injured in a fire at a bus terminal in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul. (Yonhap)
