The operator of South Korea’s top women’s golf tour said it would donate a portion of the total purse at an upcoming tournament to victims of a recent ferry sinking.

The Korea LPGA said 5 percent of the 500 million won ($484,000) purse at the KG-E Daily Ladies Open, which starts on Friday, will be donated to help those affected by the deadly sinking of the Sewol.

The KLPGA joins other sports organizations, athletes and teams in making donations in light of the April 16 accident, which has left some 300 people dead or missing.

“We wanted to share the grief and sorrow with victims and their families of the Sewol sinking,” the KLPGA said in a statement. “In addition to individual players’ donations, we will make our own donation.”

At its previous tournament last weekend, the KLPGA raised funds for the Sewol victims by placing collection boxes throughout the course. Players wore yellow ribbons in their tribute. (Yonhap)
