LG Electronics registers W Watch in U.S.

April 25, 2014 - 20:55 By Korea Herald
LG Electronics has applied for a trademark for its future smart watch, the W Watch, in the United States, the company said Friday.

An LG spokesperson said the company registered the watch at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last week, and that this trademark would be used for its future wearable lineups.

It has also registered the W Watch in Japan and China.

The W Watch was described as having “the function of wireless communications with electronic terminals such as smartphones, tablet computers, PDA and computers.”

The wearable gadget can be used to record, transmit and display information on exercise, body-fat percentage and BMI, according to the USPTO website.

The letter “W” could stand for wristband or wristwatch.

This follows its global trademark registration last year of the G Watch, its first smartwatch, powered by Google’s Android Wear operating platform, expected to be introduced during the Google Developers Conference in San Francisco on June 25.

The features of the G Watch would be similar to those of the Moto 360 by Motorola, which also used Google’s platform. Both of them will have Ok Google voice recognition.

The W Watch is expected to directly compete against Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Gear Fit, equipped with a heartbeat sensor and the world’s first curved Super AMOLED display. LG’s G Watch would be competing with Samsung’s Tizen OS-based Galaxy Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo.

LG first featured its wearable technology at the U.S. Consumer Electronics Show in January, showcasing the Lifeband Touch, which had the sole health management feature of tracking the wearer’s physical activities.
