Fire breaks out at Samsung SDS

April 20, 2014 - 20:25 By Korea Herald

A fire broke out on Sunday at one of the data centers run by Samsung SDS, an information and communication technology service provider.

The fire reportedly took place at 12:20 p.m. on the fourth floor of a data center located in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, and spread to the floors above.

The fire left an outer wall of the building and offices inside charred.

A subcontract worker was injured due to the collapse of a wall, but no other casualties were reported, the company said.

"We will fully cooperate with the authorities to figure out the exact cause of the fire and the level of damage,” said Samsung SDS in its official statement.

The center is said to be used for storing data of the firm.

Samsung SDS said in the statement that the data stored in the center have been successfully transferred to a different data center in Suwon.

The Korean firm denied news reports that the fire had affected smart TV services abroad.

The website of Samsung Card, a financial affiliate of Samsung Group, however, was unable to be accessed as of 4 p.m., raising concerns of service glitches for the credit card company.

Samsung SDS is said to be operating the systems of other Samsung Group affiliates including Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance, and Samsung Securities.
