Dutch community to mark monarch’s birthday

April 8, 2014 - 21:01 By Korea Herald
The Dutch Association in Korea will be holding a fund-raising party in Seoul to celebrate the birthday of King Willem-Alexander.

The Dutch King’s Party will feature live DJs, a standing buffet and other events.

The association, made up of the Dutch Embassy, the Dutch Business Council and the Dutch Hamel Club, had run the Orange Ball every year until 2013, when there was a monarchic transition and the embassy held a standalone event.

This year’s event will be the first to honor the new king and comes with a change of name and a more casual approach. Rather than a formal sit-down dinner there will now be a standing buffet.

Korean DJs Jinnew, Zoo and Moon will be playing a mix of modern electronic and ’70s and ’80s music.

There will also be a raffle and prizes for the best dancer and best dressed, along with a ’70s and ’80s dress code.

Guests are encouraged to include the Dutch royal house’s color of orange in their outfits, and organizer Ylona Janowitz is hoping to see some extravagant outfits.

“We encourage people to dress up with an orange accent. You know, the Dutch can go really crazy when it comes to orange things, you must have seen the football supporters,” said Janowitz.

The money raised will go to Raphael, a house for disabled children in Seoul, as well as orphanages in Ilsan, Masan and Changwon and the Good Samaritan Rehab Center in Masan.

The party will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Banyan Tree Club and Spa in Seoul. Tickets are 125,000 won. For inquiries, contact kingspartykorea@gmail.com or (010) 2498-0705.
