The main opposition Democratic Party on Tuesday called for a bipartisan meeting with top leaders of the ruling Saenuri Party to discuss its demand for a special independent probe into the state's alleged meddling in the 2012 presidential race.

DP floor leader Jun Byung-hun made the proposal during a party meeting, saying the respective leaders and floor leaders of the two parties should have made progress on their agreement last December to continue talks on the timing and extent of the special investigation.

The DP has long demanded an independent probe into allegations that the state spy agency campaigned for then presidential candidate and now president Park Geun-hye ahead of the December 2012 election, claiming that the government tampered with the prosecution's investigation into the case.

Calls for a special probe have grown after a local court acquitted former Seoul police chief Kim Yong-pan last week of scaling back and whitewashing the results of an initial police inquiry into the allegations.

"A special probe is a just demand and natural right of the public in the quest for truth and justice as well as a promise between the ruling and opposition parties," Jun said.

"It is the minimum premise for resolving social conflict and for the normal operation of state affairs as well as an unavoidable order for justice and truth." (Yonhap)
