Jan. 30, 2014 - 11:46 By 신용배

Most-loathed questions at Seollal gatherings

Lunar New Year, one of the most celebrated holidays in Korea, is a time for working Koreans to relish time off work and spend it with family. But it is also a time some workers and job seekers are asked some unpleasant questions.

Job search engine Saramin polled 1,395 job seekers and workers to figure out the list of remarks or questions they want to avoid at family gatherings.

Those currently hunting for a job and those already working showed a stark difference in their answers.

Job seekers generally want to avoid job-related topics. “Haven‘t you got a job yet?” was ranked the most irritating question with 23.4 percent, followed by “Someone I know got a good job already” (11.7 percent), “Get yourself in shape as you are growing old” (8.7 percent), “Just find any job” (6.5 percent), “When are you going to get a job and start saving money?” (6.3 percent), “Do you have a girl or boyfriend?” (5.8 percent), and “Stop relying on your parents and start paying back” (5.4 percent).

For workers, marriage is the last subject they want to discuss. Of the surveyed, 26.7 percent said they would be annoyed to be asked about their marriage plan. The questions “Have you saved some money” (13.4 percent) and “Where do you work? Is it a famous company?” (4.9 percent) also made the list. Questioning about their future plans (6 percent) or telling them unwanted news about others’ salaries (7.3 percent) are thought by the respondents to be bothersome.
