Iconic singer remembered through impersonator contest
South Korea’s famous singer Kim Kwang-seok, who killed himself in 1996, proved his unwavering appeal on the TV impersonator program “Hidden Singer 2” by beating competitors with his recordings.
The program stages a competition in which the singer and impersonators contend behind the curtain, asking guests to guess who the real singer is. In the episode aired on Saturday, the winner was Kim Kwang-seok, an artist still loved by many Korean music fans.
The production team spent a year digitalizing Kim’s recording and separating his voice from the musical accompaniment, which led to a rendition on Saturday so realistic it sounded as if the late singer himself was onstage.
The impersonators made great efforts to imitate Kim’s style and voice, but fell short of the singer’s original performance. Kim’s friends also appeared on the program to share their memories of the talented musician.
Kim has inspired many local singers and musicians, and still has a large fan base comprised of those who attended his live concerts and are now in their 30s and 40s.
