Dec. 9, 2013 - 19:57 By Korea Herald

Chinese display panel makers are bolstering their presence in the global market, rapidly catching up to their South Korean rivals in the past few months, data showed on Monday.

According to the data compiled by market researcher DisplaySearch, Chinese panel makers such as BOE Technology Group Co. shipped a combined $5.46 billion worth of large LCD panels in the first three quarters of the year, up almost 20 percent from a year earlier.

Their combined market share stood at 9.9 percent in the January-September period, rising sharply from 3 percent in 2011, the data showed.

The large LCD panels, 9.1 inches or larger, are usually used in desktop and laptop monitors and television screens.

South Korean panel makers such as LG Display Co. and Samsung Display Co. remained dominant in the global market by logging a combined $26.1 billion in the large LCD market, but their sales were down 21.4 percent from a year earlier, the data showed.

Also according to the data, their market share plunged to 47.4 percent from 53 percent in the cited period. (Yonhap News)
