President Park Geun-hye plans to give her first budget speech at the National Assembly this week, outlining her government's spending plan for fiscal 2014, the presidential office said Sunday.

In the address scheduled for Monday, Park will also enlist bipartisan cooperation in passing bread-and-butter legislation bills and unveil her future plans to run the country, it said.

The speech is expected to be watched closely as the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) has stepped up its demand that Park state her position on escalating allegations that state agencies, including the National Intelligence Service, attempted to influence December's presidential race with online political postings.

Park's address will mark the fourth time for a president to make a budget speech in person after former Presidents Roh Tae-woo in 1988, Roh Moo-hyun in 2003 and Lee Myung-bak in 2008. In other cases, the presidents have had their prime ministers read addresses on their behalf.

It will also be her third visit to the National Assembly. Park visited the parliament for her inauguration ceremony on Feb. 25 and a three-way meeting with the heads of the governing Saenuri Party and the DP on Sept. 16.

The government wants to spend 357.7 trillion won ($336 billion) next year, up 4.6 percent from this year, in order to jump-start the prolonged sluggish economic recovery. (Yonhap News)
