Samsung logs record worldwide smartphone shipments in Q3

Oct. 29, 2013 - 10:47 By 윤민식
Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest smartphone maker, shipped a record number of smartphones worldwide in the third quarter of the year on the back of its diversified product mix, data showed Tuesday.

According to the data compiled by research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung Electronics shipped a record 88.4 million smartphones in the third quarter, compared with 76 million in the previous quarter.

The South Korean smartphone maker also continued to dominate the global smartphone market in terms of market share, with its stake in the July-September period standing at a record 35.2 percent, according to the researcher.

"While shipments of the flagship Galaxy S4 model softened, solid demand for the new Note 3 phablet and for mass-market devices like the Galaxy Y helped lift Samsung's volumes," the research firm said.

Last week, Samsung Electronics Co. said its third-quarter profit spiked 26 percent from a year earlier, buoyed by robust shipments of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones and higher chip prices.

Net profit came to a record 8.24 trillion won in the July-September period, compared with a profit of 6.56 trillion won a year earlier. Revenue soared 13.2 percent on-year to 59.08 trillion won in the third quarter and operating profit climbed 26 percent to a record 10.16 trillion won.

According to the data, Samsung's archrival Apple Inc. saw its smartphone shipments rise to 33.8 million in the third quarter from 31.2 million in the previous quarter, with its market share falling to 13.4 percent from 13.6 percent over the cited period, it said.

The data showed that Huawei jumped into the third spot by shipping 12.7 million smartphones in the third quarter.

"Huawei remains very strong at home in China, but its position is less robust in other major markets like the U.S. and Europe," Strategy Analytics said.

LG Electronics Co., Samsung's smaller local rival, was relegated to the fourth spot in terms of smartphone shipments. LG Electronics shipped 12 million units in the third quarter and garnered a 4.8 percent share in the global smartphone market. (Yonhap News)
