Louis Vuitton is the most counterfeited foreign luxury brand in Korea, according to data compiled by the Korea Customs Service.
There were 616 cases involving fake Louis Vuitton items worth 487.5 billion won from 2009 to September 2013 during a customs crackdown, KCS said in its report submitted to Rep. Jung Sung-ho of the main opposition Democratic Party.
The French luxury brand, which is owned by luxury goods giant LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, has long been one of the most popular luxury brands to counterfiet in Korea.
Gucci and Chanel knock-offs followed with 516 and 508 cases reported by the customs authority. Burberry and Prada came in fourth and fifth. In terms of the goods value, Prada imitations were worth 206.7 billion won, followed by Cartier worth 206.4 billion won, Chanel worth 188.8 billion won and Rolex worth 179.8 billion won.
By fake items, handbags were the most favored counterfeit luxury goods. Luxury watches and clothing items were the second and third items most detected by the customs office.
Fake erection pills like Viagra tablets came in fourth, the customs authority said.
The fake goods market in Korea has grown with rising demand for luxury items from Koreans and foreign tourists.
Rep. Jung called for a step-up crackdown against fake designer’s goods from the government. He was quoted as saying, “Authorities should further intensify crackdown on fake foreign brand products in order for Korea to avoid being a hotbed of fake goods.”
