SoloPower Korea broke ground the construction of its factory in Gwangju this week to produce next-generation CIGS solar modules, company officials said Friday.
CIGS is a semiconductor material composed of copper, indium, gallium and selenium. Due to its flexibility and light weight, the material can be used in a variety of new areas, from industrial rooftops to automotive and daily consumer applications, according to company officials.
The company was jointly set up by the California-based SoloPower and CTI Co., a Korean green growth business entity, early this year. The U.S. solar energy company invested $250 million to build the factory, the officials said.
SoloPower Korea CEO Song Dong-jeong said the factory, located in a foreign-invested zone in Gwangju will churn out CIGS solar modules with a capacity of 155 MW annually from next year.
