North Korean leader Kim Jong-un chaired a meeting of a top military commission to decide on important matters on enhancing the country's independence and defense, the communist country's media reported Monday.
At the enlarged meeting of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea, Kim and the North's top policymakers discussed and decided on key practical issues to bolster the combat capability of the revolutionary armed forces, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.
The central commission decides on all matters related to the military in the North, where the ruling party controls all matters of running the country.
The North's official news wire service monitored in Seoul said that building up defense reflected the requirements of the "prevailing situation" and the present condition of the Korean People's Army.
"Kim Jong-un made an important concluding speech which would serve as guideline for firmly protecting the sovereignty and security of the country and promoting the cause of the Songun revolution of the party," the KCNA said.
The report did not elaborate on details of the speech or when and where the commission's meeting was held.
Songun is the North's military-first policy that has stressed the importance of its armed forces and its leading role in all matters of the state.
Policymakers also touched on organizational matters, the report said without elaborating on what was discussed.
North Korean watchers in Seoul, meanwhile, said the meeting probably took place to mark "Songun Day" that fell on Sunday, and that issues related to the overall structure and personnel management of the military may have been discussed.
Kim reportedly held another meeting of the central commission earlier in the year, with the KCNA reporting the event on Feb. 3.
That meeting probably took place just weeks before the country detonated its third nuclear device in mid-February. (Yonhap News=
