Peru to bring top guns for friendly against Korea

Aug. 9, 2013 - 20:12 By Korea Herald
Bayern Munich striker Claudio Pizarro and Schalke 04 winger Jefferson Farfan will headline the 20-man roster for Peru in an upcoming football friendly against South Korea, officials said Friday.

The Korea Football Association released Peru‘s lineup to the local press on Friday. South Korea will host the South Americans at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Suwon World Cup Stadium, about 45 kilometers south of Seoul.

Peru, ranked 22nd in the latest FIFA table, will bring most of its top guns, the KFA noted. Pizarro is the most experienced member on the team with 18 goals in 69 international matches.

The 34-year-old veteran has starred for Bayern Munich in Bundesliga, the top-division German league, in two different stints ― first from 2001 to 2007 ― before rejoining the club in 2012.

Last year, he scored 13 goals in 28 matches for the team, including four goals in six games in UEFA Champions League, helping Bayern Munich lift both Bundesliga and Champions League trophies.

Farfan has 61 caps under his belt for Peru and has scored 16 times. He was a teammate of the South Korean midfielder Park Ji-sung on the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven during the 2004-2005 season. Farfan has played for Schalke 04, a Bundesliga side, since 2008.

Another scoring threat for Peru will be Paolo Guerrero, with 19 goals in 46 international contests. A former member of Bayern Munich and Hamburger SV in Germany, Guerrero has been playing for Corinthians in Brazil since 2012. (Yonhap News)
