Samsung, LG bolster presences in N. American smartphone market

South Korea's top two smartphone makers -- Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. -- saw their presences in the North American smartphone market rise in the second quarter, helped by robust sales of their flagship line-ups and product mix, data showed on Monday.

Samsung Electronics, the world's top smartphone maker, held a 35.2 percent share in the region's smartphone market in the second quarter, up from the 29.4 percent the previous quarter, according to the data compiled by Strategy Analytics.

The South Korean handsetmaker also topped Apple Inc. in terms of smartphone sales in the region. The iPhone maker garnered a 32.3 percent share in the region, according to the data.

Samsung's market share in the North American smartphone market has been on the rise reaching 17.6 percent in 2011 and 26.6 percent in 2012.

LG Electronics clinched a 10 percent stake in the North American market, the data showed.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics shipped a record 76 million smartphones around the world in the second quarter, compared with 69.4 million in the previous quarter, earlier data showed.

The South Korean smartphone maker also continued to dominate the global smartphone market in terms of market share, with its stake in the April-June period standing at 33.1 percent, remaining flat from the previous quarter, according to the researcher.

LG Electronics sold a total of 12.1 million smartphones in the second quarter, rising from 10.3 million units the previous quarter, with its market share at 5.4 percent, up 0.4 percentage point over the cited period, the data showed. (Yonhap News)
