한국국적의 재일 정치학자 강상중(62) 교수가 현재 교수직으로 있는 일본 사립 세이가쿠인 종합대학의 학장(한국의 총장)에 선임됐다.

30일 학교의 공식 홈페이지에 의하면, 대학 이사회는 지난 22일, 임기 만료를 앞둔 현 학장의 후임자로써 강교수를 선임했다고 한다. 임기는 내년 4월부터 5년간이다.

한국인의 국적을 갖은 자가 일본 종합대학의 총장에 선임되는 전례는 극히 드문 일로, 지난해, 한방전문의인 정종철(64)씨가 일본 사이타마(埼玉)현에 있는 단과대학인 일본약과대학의 학장에 선임된 바 있다.

1950년 재일한국인 2세로 일본 구마모토현에서 출생한 강 교수는 와세다 대학교에서 정치학을 공부한 뒤, 재일동포로는 처음 도쿄대 정교수가 됐다.

15년간 도쿄대 사회정보연구소와 정보학연구소 교수, 그리고 활발한 저술활동과 TV출연등으로 그의 전공 분야인 일본 근대와 식민지 지배사를 중심으로 재일동포의 정체성, 한일관계 등에 걸쳐 그의 의견을 피력했다.

스무 권이 넘는 책의 저자인 강 교수는 국내에서도 출간 된 “살아야 하는 이유,”와 “고민하는 힘”등으로 베스트셀러 작가로 등극했으며, 최근 일본에서는 그의 저서 “마음”이 인기를 끌고 있다. (코리아헤럴드)

Kang Sang-jung named as president of Seigakuin University

Kang Sang-jung, a political scientist and writer, was named the president of Seigakuin University, the first time a Korean national has been named to head an institute of higher education in Japan. 

According to the university’s official website on Tuesday, the school board made the decision on July 22 -- before the present office holder‘s term expires. Kang will serve in the position for five years from April 2014. 

A 64-year-old scholar who has taught at Seigakuin since 2013, was born and raised in Kumamoto, Kyushu island, as the third son of a Korean migrant. 

After studying political science at Waseda University, he became a full professor at the University of Tokyo in 1998, also the first time for a Korean to take up such a post at Japan’s top university.

For more than 15 years, Kang has published many contribution articles and joined media forums as a commentator and a critic, discussing the Korean-Japanese identity, nuclear war and Korea-Japan relationships, and the conflict-laden history of Japan‘s colonization. 

Kang has published more than 20 books including “Heart,“ his latest novel about the March 11, 2011, earthquake, which is currently a bestseller in Japan.
