Gomez, Brewers clip Reds 4-3

July 9, 2013 - 19:48 By Korea Herald
MILWAUKEE (AP) ― Carlos Gomez robbed Joey Votto of a potential go-ahead homer with a spectacular catch in center field in the ninth inning, saving the Milwaukee Brewers’ 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

Jonathan Lucroy homered for the third consecutive game for last-place Milwaukee, which had dropped three of four. Jean Segura had three hits off Homer Bailey in the right-hander’s first start since his second career no-hitter.

But Gomez made the biggest play of the game when he made a perfectly timed jump to grab Votto’s drive to center for the final out of the game, sending a charge through the crowd on an otherwise sleepy night at Miller Park.

Kyle Lohse (5-6) pitched into the seventh inning for his fourth consecutive winning decision.

Bailey was coming off an absolute gem at home against San Francisco last Tuesday night, when he struck out nine and allowed just one baserunner on a seventh-inning walk. The impressive performance in the Reds’ 3-0 victory gave Bailey a chance to become the second pitcher in major league history to throw consecutive no-hitters.

Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX (AP) ― Zack Greinke gave up two hits in seven scoreless innings in his first game against Arizona since last month’s bench-clearing brawl and the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped the Diamondbacks’ five-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory Monday night.

Greinke (7-2) struck out seven and walked two in his fourth straight win. He also had a career-high three hits.

Hanley Ramirez singled three times to extend his career-best hitting streak to 19 games and was one of five Dodgers with an RBI.

Los Angeles, winner of 13 of 16, tied its season high with 17 hits ― 16 of them singles.

Randall Delgado (1-3) allowed three runs on 11 hits in six innings to take the loss.

Andre Ethier also had three hits as Los Angeles climbed within 3 1/2 games of the first-place Diamondbacks in the NL West.

Arizona averted the shutout on Eric Chavez’s RBI single in the ninth.

Tigers 4, Indians 2

CLEVELAND (AP) ― Max Scherzer didn’t care that his record stayed spotless. All that mattered to him was that Detroit’s improved.

Scherzer remained unbeaten and Victor Martinez hit a two-run double in the 10th inning as the Tigers extended their lead in the AL Central with a 4-2 win over the second-place Cleveland Indians on Monday night.

Martinez doubled off Matt Albers (2-1) as the Tigers won three of four in the series and moved 3 1/2 games ahead in the division.

Scherzer, attempting to become the first pitcher since Roger Clemens in 1986 to open a season 14-0, finished with a no-decision. He allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings. The presumed AL starter in next week’s All-Star game will take his unblemished mark into a start on Saturday against Texas.

“I don’t want to focus much on that (being 13-0),” he said. “This was our best win of the year, and I was proud to be a part of it. The Indians battled so hard tonight and brought their ‘A’ game, and we did, too.”
