Japan’s ice skating champion Miki Ando revealed that she gave birth to a daughter in April in an interview with TV Asahi on Monday.
“There was a lot of opposition about me having a baby. However, after a long, careful consideration, I chose my baby over skating,” said the 27-year-old ice skater as she announced her plan to retire after competing for the last time at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
She did not mention the baby’s father during the interview.
Japanese media speculated Nikolai Morozov, Ando’s former coach and ex-boyfriend, might be the candidate for the father but he denied the rumor.
“I did not know anything about Ando’s pregnancy,” he said.
