웹툰 원작 영화가 국내 박스오피스를 점령하고 있는 가운데, 웹툰 자체를 소재로 한 공포영화 “더 웹툰: 예고살인”이 17일 시사회를 통해 첫 선을 보였다.

“분홍구두”로 유명한 김용균 감독이 이번엔 “웹툰”을 주제로 공포영화를 구성해 나갔다.

인기 웹툰 작가 강지윤(이시영 분)은 늦은 밤 작품을 완성시킨 후 담당자에게 메일을 보낸다. 메일을 받은 담당자는 새로운 내용을 보고 식은땀을 흘리는데, 자신의 은밀한 사생활이 고스란히 웹툰에 담겨 있었기 때문이다. 이어 갑자기 문이 잠기고 그는 다음날 시신으로 발견된다.

이에 형사 기철은(엄기준 분) 단순한 자살로 사건을 마무리 지으려다 이상한 낌새를 눈치채고 지윤의 웹툰과 계속해서 일어나는 카피캣 살인사건의 실마리를 풀어나간다.

김용균 감독에 의하면 다른 공포 영화와는 달리 치밀하게 구성돼 있는 스토리라인이 평소 무서운 것을 잘 보지 못하는 관객마저도 끌어들일 것이라고 한다. 또한 2D인 만화를 놀라울 정도로 영상화 시킨 기술도 볼거리 중 하나라고 한다.

Webtoon spooks movie audiences

A growing number of Korean films are borrowing storylines from webtoons -- and “Killer Toon” is bringing the simple webtoon-based movie genre to a new level. 

The film, directed by Kim Yong-gyun, takes a webtoon itself as the key motif. In the movie, Jiyoon, a horror webtoon artist played by Lee Si-young, submits her manuscript to an editor, barely meeting the deadline. What‘s scary is that Jiyoon’s episodes involve the editor‘s private. Then, a murder takes place. 

Detective Kicheol, played by Eom Ki-joon, sets out to solve the murders seemingly copying the crime scenes depicted in Jiyoon’s webtoon series.

“The tension of the closely knitted storyline will even lure those who do not enjoy watching horror movies at all,” said director Kim Yong-geun, during its first premiere on June 17. “We also adapted high-end techniques to render the scenes into the closest imitation of the cartoon drawings.”

”Killer Toon“ is scheduled to hit local theaters on June 27.
