보도에 따르면 클린턴은 시몬 페레스 이스라엘 대통령의 90회 생일을 맞아 오는 17일 이스라엘 레호보트에서 열리는 행사에 연설할 계획이다.

시간은 45분으로, 1분에 약 1100만원을 받는 셈이다. 클린턴에게 돈을 건넨 모임은 전국유대인기금(JNF)이며, 이스라엘에서 나무 심기 운동을 하는 등 환경 보호에 앞장서는 비영리 단체다.

이에 대해 이스라엘 현지에서는 액수가 적절치 않다는 비판이 일고 있다. 강연시간과 비교했을 때 액수가 터무니없이 높다는 것이 그 이유다.

한편, 강연료는 클린턴 개인주머니가 아닌 윌리엄 클린턴 재단에 들어간다. 클린턴 재단은 세계 보건과 경제 발전, 건강과 복지 증진, 환경보호 등을 위해 활동한다.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton received $500,000 for delivering a 45-minute speech at an event to be held in Israel, according to local reports.

Clinton will make a speech to celebrate Israeli President Shimon Peres’ 90th birthday at the Peres Academic Center in Rehovot on June 17. The Jewish National Fund, the nonprofit environmental organization in Israel, reportedly paid the fee.
