South Korea’s governing body of amateur boxing has been reinstated as a member federation of the sport’s top international organization, officials here said Monday.

The International Boxing Association last week lifted its provisional suspension of membership on the Korean Amateur Boxing Federation, KABF officials said. The decision was reached during the AIBA’s extraordinary executive meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, Saturday.

South Korean amateur boxers are now eligible to compete in AIBA-sanctioned international competitions, including world championships and the Olympic Games.

In July last year, the AIBA decided to temporarily strip the KABF of its membership after the South Korean body failed to hold a proper board meeting and elect a new president to replace the outgoing Ahn Sang-soo.

The AIBA’s decision took effect immediately after the London Olympics in August.

After Ahn resigned in April 2012, the KABF opted to promote its vice president, Kim Young-ki, to the presidency rather than hold an election as the AIBA had requested.

The KABF finally got its act together last month, electing Saenuri Party lawmaker Chang Yoon-seok as its new chief. (Yonhap News)
