캠브리지 대학 내의 남성동호회가 해마다 여는 여성 젤리 레슬링 행사가 학교 내 여학생들의 강력한 반대에 부딪혀 무산되었다.
영국 데일리 메일 등이 7일 (현지시간) 보도한 바에 따르면 와이번 소사이이티란 동호회는 공식성명을 통해 올해는 젤리 레슬링 대회를 열지 않겠다고 발표했다. 매년 시험기간이 끝나고 열리는 여름 파티의 일환으로 실시되는 이 대회는 비키니를 입은 여성 두 명이 젤리 속에서 서로 레슬링을 해 우승자를 가린다.
캠브리지 학생인 니나 드 폴라 하니카 씨는 6일, 이 행사의 중지를 요구하는 탄원서를 냈다. 그 탄원서에는 현재 1,100명 이상이 성명한 상태이다.
그녀는 이 대회가 “21세기에 발붙일 곳이 없는 시대착오적인 성차별 행사”라면서 이런 대회가 아직도 있다는 것에 충격을 받았다고 비난했다.
캠브리지 학생회의 여성 캠페인(Women’s Campaign) 역시 레슬링 대회를 비판하며 하니카 씨의 탄원서를 전적으로 지원할 것을 약속했다. 학생회의 수지 랭스데일 씨는 젤리 레슬링 대회가 대학 내의 성차별적인 요소 중에서도 단연 돋보인다면서, “여성의 신체를 노골적으로 물건 취급하는” 대회라고 맹렬히 비판했다. (코리아헤럴드)

Cambridge society calls off jelly wrestling after ‘sexism’ furor
A Cambridge University drinking society announced Tuesday that it is ending its “traditional” jelly wrestling ritual after students complained the event displayed sexism.
According to British news reports, Cambridge student Nina de Paula Hanika recently started a petition to protest the wrestling event hosted by the Wyverns Society, an all-male drinking society of the prestigious British school.
The annual event had bikini-clad women fighting in a pool of jelly for a cash prize. It is part of a summer garden party to celebrate the end of exams.
Hanika told local media that she was “shocked” when she found out about the wrestling match, saying the event was an “outdated bastion of sexism that has no place in the 21st century.” She added the event’s removal is long overdue.
Susy Langsdale of the Cambridge University Student Union (CUSU) decried the jelly wrestling as a “blatant objectification of female bodies” and said it stands out as an extreme form of sexist element within college initiation ceremonies.
CUSU Women’s Campaign vowed full support for Hanika’s petition.
