Eighteen under probe over marijuana use

May 6, 2013 - 10:43 By 윤민식

Two people have been arrested on charges of selling and smoking marijuana, police said Monday.

The two, including a 34-year-old member of a local indie band surnamed Shin, are suspected of collecting marijuana from a mountain in Jeongsun, Gangwon Province, and using the drug twice last October before selling it to four others, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) said.

That quantity is enough for approximately 100 doses, officers at the SMPA said.

"An investigation shows that Shin collected marijuana in person and sold it to his acquaintances due to financial difficulties while working as a member of the indie band," an officer at the SMPA said.

The SMPA said it has also booked 16 others, including a member of pop idol group DMTN and an American female TV personality, for investigation over allegations that they smoked the marijuana or brokered the sales.

Choi Daniel, DMTN's 22-year-old lead vocal, is accused of using and selling marijuana to his acquaintances on three occasions last September, the SMPA said.

Bianca Mobley, who gained popularity in South Korea after starring in a TV show featuring foreign women living here, is suspected of smoking marijuana and brokering the drug sales between Choi and another suspect, the SMPA added.

"Most of the suspects were in their early 20s and had previously studied abroad in the U.S. where the culture is relatively lenient toward drug use. They had no sense of guilt," the officer added. (Yonhap News)
