2013 순천만국제정원박람회가 지난 주 15년의 역사를 지닌 세계적인 정원박람회를 처음으로 주최하게 되었다. 국제원예생산자협회의 주관으로 진행되는 이번 박람회는 10월 20일까지 전라남도 순천 순천만에서 열리게 된다.

이번 박람회는 자연미와 자연친화적인 환경을 있는 그대로 보여주는 세 구역으로 나뉘어져 있다. 5만6천여 평방미터 규모의 메인 전시장은 10개국의 정원과 여러 테마로 구성된 정원의 모습을 보여준다. 10만 평방미터 규모의 국제습지센터는 생태계의 무수히 많은 생물을 공부하고 직접 경험할 수 있게 만들어준다. 25만 평방미터 규모의 로얄 아잘리아 가든이 있는 수목원도 전시되어 있다. 

이번 박람회는 2천450억 원이 투자되었고 일 평균 2만 여명의 관광객을 유치할 것으로 예상된다. 한국에서 가장 깨끗한 도시 중 하나인 순천시가 국제 정원박람회를 주관함으로서 순천만이 국내 에코투어리즘(ecotourism)의 중심지가 될 것을 관계자들은 기대하고 있다.

Suncheon Bay Garden Expo opens its doors

The Suncheon Bay Garden Expo 2013 opens its doors to the public on Saturday, marking the first time that Korea is hosting the international garden event with a 15-year history. The Garden Expo, which is organized by the International Association of Horticultural Producers, is located in Suncheonman Bay, in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province and will run through Oct. 20.

The expo stands as an example of natural beauty and an eco-friendly environment with three sections including the 564,000-square meter main expo site featuring 10 country gardens and a wide-variety of themed gardens; the International Wetland Center, 100,500 square meters, featuring a number of ecological learning and experience halls; and an arboretum measuring 253,000 square meters that features the Royal Azalea Garden and a forest exploration zone.

The expo is estimated to have cost around 245.5 billion won and is expected to draw more than 20,000 visitors a day from all over the globe. With Suncheon being one of the cleanest cities in Korea and the development of landscaping and horticultural brought on by hosting this year’s garden expo, organizers expect Suncheon Bay to be transformed into the nation’s ecotourism hub.
