‘기독교의 나라’ 미국에서 동성결혼을 지지하는 물결이 크게 일고 있다.

미국 대법원은 3월 26일 동성결혼을 금지하는 캘리포니아주 법에 대한 변론을 청취하고 27일에는 결혼을 남성 한 명과 여성 한 명 사이의 혼인으로 규정한 1996년의 연방 결혼법을 심리하게 된다.

이 소식에 몇 주간 페이스북과 트위터는 빨간 “=” 사인으로 뒤덮였다. 이는 미국 동성애옹호단체인 HRC가 대법원의 동성결혼관련 심리에 동성애결혼 지지의사를 밝히기 위해 소셜 미디어 사용자들에게 프로필 사진으로 등록하라고 권유한 사진이다.

HRC 공식 페이스북 페이지에서 처음 소개된 이 로고는 40,000개의 "좋아요"를 얻고 급속도로 퍼져나갔다.

300여 미국 기업들은 DOMA가 위헌으로 수정을 촉구하는 서명안을 대법원에 제출했다. 애플, 월트디즈니, 트위터는 대표적인 동성결혼 지지기업이다.

스티브 살부 조지아공과대 SCB 교수는 “성공적인 기업들은 레즈비언?게이?양성애?트랜스젠더(LGBT) 인재를 뽑기 위해 경쟁하고 있다”고 설명했다.

CBS가 지난 3월 20~24일 미국 내 성인 1181명에게 설문조사를 실시한 결과 60%가 연방정부가 동성결혼을 합법화해야 한다고 답했다. 이는 2005년 워싱턴포스트와 ABC방송이 진행한 동성결혼에 대한 찬성과 반대 비율 여론조사의 약 40% 대 60% 이었던 것으로 8년 만에 수치가 역전되는 현상이 일어났다. 

현재 미국에서는 50개주 중 9개주에서 동성결혼을, 8개주가 결혼과 비슷한 권리를 주는 ‘시민결합’(civil union)을 허용하고 있다. 대법원은 동성결혼 찬반론자들의 의견을 듣고 오는 6월 말 쯤 결론을 내릴 예정이다.

More U.S. citizens side with legalizing gay marriage

A wave of support for gay marriage is sweeping across the United States as the country is reconsidering its stance on its marriage laws.

The U.S. Supreme Court in late March opened hearings over California’s law barring same-sex marriages, Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, the U.S. federal law which limits marriage recognition to only heterosexual marriages.

For the past few weeks until the hearing date, Facebook walls and Twitter accounts were plastered with picture of a red equal sign in support of gay marriage. It was first distributed on the Human Rights Commission’s official Facebook page, claiming more than 40,000 “likes” and was rapidly shared through various social media.

Nearly 300 U.S. companies, including big enterprises such as Apple, Walt Disney and Twitter, have signed a petition calling for the Supreme Court to overturn a portion of the DOMA.

“Attitudes and practices are changing rapidly in corporations. Successful companies compete for top lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender talent, as well as for LGBT customers,” said Steve Salbu, a business expert at Georgia University Institute of Technology.

According to the survey by U.S. television network CBS in 2013, 60 percent of 1,181 adults residing in the U.S. said the federal government should legalize gay marriage. It is a 20 percent increase from the 2005 survey by the Washington Post and ABC network, which showed 4 out of 10 Americans supported gay marriage.

Currently, nine of the 50 states in the U.S. approve of homosexual marriage, as well as the nation’s capital Washington, D.C.

The Supreme Court is expected to announce their rulings by the end of June.
