고급 화장품 에스티로더의 명예 회장 레너드 로더(80)가 40년간 수집해온 본인 소장 미술품들을 뉴욕의 메트로폴리탄 박물관에 기증하기로 했다.

로더가 기증한 미술품들은 20세기 초에 발생한 “입체파” 작품들이며, 그 중 78점은 피카소, 브라크, 그리스, 그리고 레제의 작품들을 포함하며 총 10억 달러(약 1조 1400억원)이다.

미국 최고의 미술관인 메트로폴리탄 박물관은 오랜 기간 동안 그렇다 할 20세기 작품들이 없었다. 이에 미술관 최고경영자 토마스 캠벨은 로더의 선물은 박물관에 “변혁적”인 변화를 가져올 것이라고 말했다.

NYC’s Met gets $1b Cubist collection donation

Leonard Lauder, honorary chairman of cosmetics firm Estee Lauder, has given New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art an entire collection of Cubist art worth $1 billion.

The collection which Lauder has assembled over more than four decades includes 78 works of Picasso, Braque, Gris and Leger, making it the biggest art donation ever made.

The Met has long been trying to secure major artworks from the early 20th century. Thomas Campbell, CEO of the Met, said, “Lauder’s gift would be truly transformational for the Metropolitan Museum.”

The Lauder collection will be unveiled in the second half of 2014, the museum said.
