Korean films attract record-high 39.4m in Q1

The number of moviegoers for Korean films here marked a record-high of 39.4 million from January through March, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Thursday.

The figure topped the previously held record of 37.2 million set in the third quarter of 2012.

Seven Korean films were ranked among the top 10 movies, accounting for 69.4 percent of the audience, the authorities said. The biggest hit was “Miracle in Cell No.7” with 12.7 million audiences, followed by “Berlin File” with 7.1 million and “New World” with 4.5 million.

The total number of moviegoers in the first quarter of this year stood at 55.44 million, marking 406 billion won in sales, a 34.9 percent rise from the same period last year.
