인도의 여대생들이 성폭행 범죄를 방지하기 위한 ’전기충격’ 속옷을 개발해 화제다.

이 속옷은 원치 않는 외부 압력이 들어왔을 때, 전류를 최대 82번 방출 가능하며 2차적으로 근처 경찰서나, 지정해놓은 긴급 번호로 구조요청의 문자를 보낼 수 있다. GPS(위성위치확인 시스템)와 GSM(휴대전화통신 모듈)을 탑재하고 있기 때문에 위치정보 전달도 가능하다.

“만약, 잠재적 성폭행범이 폭력을 가하려고 한다면 아마 그들은 생애 처음으로 맛보는 강력한 전기충격을 받을 것이다,” 라고 인도 소재의 SRM대학의 학생, 마니샤 모한이 첨단 속옷의 의의를 밝혔고, 이번 달 이내에 출시를 계획하고 있다.

발명에 기여한 세 명의 여성 공학도들은 최근 인도에서 발생한 수 차례의 끔찍한 성폭행, 특히 스위스 여성과 23 살 여대생의 버스안에서의 집단 성폭행이 보도 된 후, 사태의 심각성을 인식하여 "성폭행 방지 속옷"에 대한 아이디어를 착안했다.

잇따른 성범죄가 발생한 지 3개월 만에, 인도의 여행 방문자는 25% 감소했고, 여성 방문자는 35%가 감소했다. (코리아 헤럴드)

Indian students tinker with anti-rape underwear

Female engineering students in India claimed they have developed electronic rape-preventing underwear with a built-in GPS system.

“A person trying to molest a girl will get the shock of his life the moment the pressure sensors get activated, and the GPS ad GSM modules would send an SMS (to the Indian emergency number) as well as to the parents of the girl,” said Manisha Mohan, an engineering student at SRM University in Chennai.

The electric undergarment can deliver up to 82 electric shocks when pressure sensors detect unwanted force. At the same time, it will send emergency text messages to the police, family and friends using a built-in GPS system.

The new device called “Society Harnessing Equipment” is in response to the ongoing problem of prevalent sexual violence against women in India, highlighted by a gang rape of a Swiss tourist and a 23-year-old Indian student on a bus.

According to a daily newspaper in India, the engineering students are planning to roll out the product later this month.
