한국출판사가 펴낸 그림책 ‘눈(Eyes)’이 세계 최고 권위의 볼로냐 아동도서전에서 최고상인 라가치상을 받는다. 

출판사 창비가 펴내고, 폴란드 작가인 이보나 흐미엘레프스카가 쓰고, 그린 이 책은 25-26일 이탈리아에서 열리는 제 50회 볼로냐 아동도서전에서 라가치상 픽션 부문 대상을 받게 됐다고 출판사 창비는 밝혔다. 

한국 책이 라가치상 대상을 받는 것은 이보나 흐미엘레프스카가 일러스트를 그린 ‘마음의 집’이 2011년 대상을 받은 이후 두 번째 이다. 

이보나 흐미엘레프스카는 2011년 ‘마음의 집’ 그림 작가로 대상을 받은 데 이어 ‘눈’으로 2관왕에 오르게 됐으며, 창비도 라가치상 대상을 두편 배출한 출판사로 이름을 올렸다.

평가단들은 ‘눈’은 ‘볼 수 있다’는 것의 의미를 따스하고 잔잔한 분위기로 담아낸 책으로, “용기 있는 실험과 성찰로 구축된, 세련된 우아함을 지닌 매우 참신한 작품”이라는 평가를 내리면서 대상을 수여했다. 

이보나 흐미엘레프스카는 창비를 통해 “우리에게 눈은 소중한 선물이지만 볼 수 없는 상태에서도 우리는 우리 안에 있는 다른 선물들을 발견할 수 있다는 것”을 ‘눈’에 담아내고자 했다고 소감을 밝혔다.

창비 관계자는 “한국 출판계가 창작 그림책을 본격적으로 내놓기 시작한 지 20여년 만에 이룬 쾌거”라고 말했다. 

라가치상은 픽션과 논픽션 부문에서 대상을 각 1편을 선정하며 우수상을 2-3편씩 뉴호라이즌, 오페라프리마 등을 합친 총 네개 부문에서 우수상(the mention)을 2~3편씩 가린다.

Book by Korean publisher wins best children’s book award at Bologna

A children’s book published by a Korean company won the Ragazzi Award at Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the top award of the prestigious annual event in Bologna, Italy. 

The picture book, titled “Eyes,” written and illustrated by Polish author Iwon Chmielewska and translated into Korean, will be announced the winner in the fiction category of the 50th Bologna Children’s Book Fair next week, according to the Changbi Publishers. 

The jury of the award said the book “creates an indissoluble bond between what we see and how we understand, between the astonishment at learning to see in a new way and the contentment of knowing.” 

The author said through the publisher: “I tried to offer that the sight was not only what enables us to see objects, but a channel to the soul and other gifts we have inside.” 

An official of Changbi Publishers said the award is a significant achievement for the publisher, which has been making children’s books for 20 years. 

Changbi Publishers and Chmielewska won the top fiction award for another children’s book, “A House of the Mind: Maum,” in 2011. 

The Ragazzi Award selects winners in the category of fiction and nonfiction, as well as two to three second-prize winners every year.
