Minister of Future Planning and Science nominee Kim Jeong-hoon withdrew his nomination on Monday saying he was unable to “maintain the will to sacrifice” himself for his country.

“Looking at the opposition party that refuses to meet with the president and the chaos in the political arena, I was unable to maintain the will to sacrifice (myself) for my country,” Kim said in a press conference at the National Assembly.

On Sunday, after floor leaders’ talks on the government reorganization plans fell apart, the main opposition Democratic United Party declined to attend a three-way meeting with President Park Geun-hye and the ruling Saenuri Party.

The DUP and the Saenuri Party have been in gridlock over which government organization will oversee broadcasting-related issues including IPTV and cable television.

Kim, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs and Corporate Strategy, also stressed that he had given up everything he had achieved in the U.S. to take Park’s offer.

He added that the decision was influenced by the fact that he agreed with the president’s view that the future of the country depended on the “creative economy.”

“However, the National Assembly was not moved by the important situation on which the future of the nation and the fate of the people hang,” Kim said.

“My dream of sacrificing everything for my country has been shattered by the chaos and controversy surrounding the Government Organization Act revision centering on the Ministry of Future Planning and Science.”

김종훈 미래창조과학부 장관 내정자는 4일  "이제 조국을 위해 헌신하려 했던 마음을 접으려 한다"며 내정자직 사퇴를 전격 선언했다.

김 내정자는 이날 국회 정론관에서 한 기자회견에서 "대통령 면담조차 거부하는 야당과 정치권 난맥상을 지켜보면서 제가 조국을 위해 헌신하려 했던 마음을 지켜내 기 어려워졌다"면서 이같이 밝혔다.

김 내정자는 기자회견 후 사퇴하는 것이냐는 취재진의 질문에 "네"라고 답변했다.

그는 "저는 오늘 참담한 심정으로 이 자리에 섰다"면서 "어려서 미국으로 이민가 열심히 연구하고 도전했다. 한국인으로서 자긍심을 갖고 미국에서 인정받는 한국인으로 자리 잡을 때까지 수많은 도전과 어려움을 극복해 왔다"고 말했다.

그러면서 "제가 미국에서 일궈 온 모든 것을 포기하고 마지막으로 저를 낳아 준 조국을 위해 헌신하고자, 남은 일생을 바치고자 돌아왔다. 그 길을 선택한 것은 대한민국의 미래가 박근혜 대통령이 말하는 창조경제에 달렸다고 생각했기 때문"이라고 설명했다.

그는 "우리 대한민국은 과학과 ICT(정보통신기술) 산업을 생산적으로 융합해 새로운 일자리와 미래성장동력을 창출해야 미래를 열 수 있다"면서 "저는 그 비전에 공감하고 나라의 미래를 위한 박 대통령의 선택에 감명받아 동참하고자 했으나 국가의 운명과 국민의 미래가 걸린 중대한 시점에 국회가 움직이지 않고 미래창조과학부 둘러싼 논란과 여러 혼란상을 보면서 조국을 위해 모든 것을 바치려던 저의 꿈도 산산조각이 났다"고 털어놨다.

김 내정자는 "제가 조국을 위해 바치려 했던 모든 것이 무너지고 논란의 대상이 되는 것을 더 이상 지켜볼 수 없다고 판단했다"며 사퇴배경을 설명했다.
