TV personality Hong Suk-chun described his feelings about outing himself on SBS TV talk show “Healing Camp” to be aired late Monday.

The 42-year-old came out as gay in 2000, the first Korean entertainer to do so.

“I regret coming out of the closet. I was in so much pain afterwards so I felt God abandoned me,” said Hong in the program.

Hong expressed concerns that Korea was still biased against homosexuals and said that he is now working as an adviser to those in social minority groups.

Korea has a long way to go in protecting and respecting social minority groups, including homosexuals. Last year, for example, the Seocho District Office rejected the National Human Rights Commission of Korea’s ads concerning discrimination against homosexuals.

Hong said his 2000 outing was not his first as he had revealed his sexual orientation while he was in college. Hong’s full story is set to air at 11:15 p.m. on Monday.

‘힐링캠프’ 홍석천 “커밍아웃 후회한다”



방송인 홍석천(42)이 SBS TV 토크쇼 ‘힐링캠프, 기쁘지 아니한가’에 출연해 지난 2000년 동성애자라는 사실을 고백한 ‘커밍아웃’ 이후 겪은 마음고생을 털어놨다.

홍석천은 2000년 동성애자임을 한국 연예인으로서는 처음 밝혔다.

‘힐링캠프’ 제작진은 4일 홍석천이 최근 진행된 녹화에서 “커밍아웃을 후회한다”며 “‘신마저도 나를 버렸다’는 느낌에 너무나 고통스러웠다”고 토로했다고 전했다.

그는 동성애자를 향한 여전한 편견에 안타까워하며 “성적소수자를 위한 상담가가 돼 그들의 고민을 들어주고 있다”며 “밤잠까지 설칠 정도로 그들의 아픔을 나누는 데 힘을 쏟고 있다”고 그들을 위해 발벗고 뛰고 있음을 밝혔다.

실제로 작년에도 국가인권위원회가 성소수자에 대한 차별을 반대하는 내용의 광고 게재를 서초구청이 거부한 적이 있다.

지난 2000년 화제와 논란을 동시에 몰고 온 커밍아웃이 처음이 아니었음을 밝히며, 대학 시절 커밍아웃을 한 경험과 방송에서도 이를 고백했지만, 편집 당해 드러낼 수 없었던 에피소드를 들려줬다.
