NEW DELHI (AFP) ― A South Korean student holidaying on her own in India was allegedly drugged and raped by the son of a hotel owner as she visited a tiger reserve in central India, police said on Friday.

The 23-year-old college student has filed a police case saying she was raped on January 14 after returning to the hotel from a safari at the Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh state.

“The incident happened last month but she said she did not have the courage to report it right away. She approached us on Thursday and we have registered a case against the accused,” inspector Prakash Kulkarni told AFP.

Kulkarni, a police officer in Aurangabad city of Maharashtra state where the complaint was made, said the case had been transferred to his counterparts in neighboring Madhya Pradesh.

The incident comes on the heels of the brutal gang-rape of a student in New Delhi in December that has triggered an outpouring of criticism of the police and inadequate safety for women in Indian society.

(뉴델리=연합뉴스) 유창엽 특파원 = 인도를 여행중이던 한국 여대생이 약물에 취한 채 성폭행 당한 사건이 발생했다.

1일 타임스 오브 인디아 등 현지 언론에 따르면 피해 여대생은 지난달 14일 인도 중부 마디아 프라데시주(州)의 호랑이 보호구역 부근 리조트에 투숙했다가 현지인 남성에게 성폭행을 당했다.

이 여대생은 자신을 리조트 소유주의 아들이라고 소개한 남성의 안내를 받아 호랑이 사파리를 하던 중 남성이 건넨 맥주를 마신 뒤 이상증세를 느꼈다.

여대생은 경찰 고소장에서 "갑자기 피곤하고 어지러워 급히 호텔방으로 돌아와 문을 잠근 뒤 의식을 잃었다"면서 "이후 밤늦게 깨어나서 보니 문제의 남성이 성폭행을 하고 있었다"고 밝혔다.

놀란 여대생은 피해 사실을 곧바로 신고하지 못하다가 지난달 29일 한국대사관에 전화를 걸어 상담한 뒤 31일 경찰에 신고했다.

인도 경찰은 여대생의 신고에 따라 용의자를 체포, 조사를 벌이고 있다.

뭄바이 주재 한국총영사관 관계자는 "피해 여대생이 혼자 인도를 장기간 여행하다가 이런 일을 당한 것으로 안다"면서 "한국인들이 개인적으로 인도를 여행할 때는 현지인이 건네는 음료수를 함부로 받아마시지 않는 등 각별한 주의를 기울여달라"고 당부했다.
