Social media company Facebook added a new calling feature for iPhone users in the United States, BBC reported Friday.

iPhone users in the U.S. are now able to call free-of-charge via Facebook Messenger app with Wi-Fi or a cellular-data connection.

In the Facebook Messenger app, users can tap the ‘i’ icon in the upper right hand corner to make free calls. Users, however, can only make free calls to friends that have installed Messenger on their iPhones. Calls to landline numbers or friends who log on to Facebook via desktop computers are not available.

Facebook said it would also add the same free call service to its Android Messenger app and BlackBerry, while a similar service for overseas users is also being planned.

Meanwhile, the company introduced a smart search engine dubbed “Graph Search” that allows users to search the site for information shared by friends on Tuesday.

페이스북 “아이폰으로 무료통화 가능”

페이스북이 미국 내 아이폰 이용자들이 무료 통화를 할 수 있도록 지원하는 기능을 자사 모바일 앱에 추가했다고 BBC가 18일 보도 했다.

이에 따라 미국 내 아이폰 이용자들은 페이스북 메신저 앱을 통해 와이파이망이나 자신이 가입한 이동통신 데이터 플랜 범위 내에서 무료로 통화할 수 있게 됐다.

페이스북 메신저 앱으로 통화를 하려면 오른쪽 위에 위치한 `i‘라는 아이콘을 누르고 무료 통화를 선택하기만 하면 된다.

그러나 이 무료통화는 스마트폰에 페이스북 메신저 앱을 설치한 사람들끼리만 가능하다. 데스크탑을 통해 페이스북에 로그인한 사람이나 일반 전화에 통화를 하는 것은 안 된다.

페이스북은 무료통화 기능을 안드로이드와 블랙베리 이용자들도 이용할 수 있도록 자사 메신저 앱을 업데이트할 예정이라고 밝혔다. 또한, 페이스북은 해외에서도 무료통화가 가능한 메신저앱도 내놓을 예정이다.

한편 페이스북은 지난 15일 친구들끼리 공유한 콘텐츠를 자연스럽게 찾아줄 수 있도록 지원하는 그래프 검색이라는 스마트 검색엔진을 공개한 바 있다. (코리아헤럴드)
