U.S. soldiers stationed in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province, gave briquettes to local residents Wednesday.

About 70 soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division handed over 10,000 briquettes to less fortunate residents in a nearby village who could barely afford fuel in the winter.

They and their families chipped in to raise about 5 million won to buy the briquettes, and braved the severely cold weather Wednesday to deliver them in person.

Recipient homes were chosen beforehand by a community service center run by the Dongducheon City Hall.

A cold front warning was issued in and around Dongducheon on the day, with the mercury dropping to minus 16.8 degrees Celsius in the morning.
