Any United Nations reaction to North Korea's rocket launch should be "prudent", China's foreign ministry said Thursday after Beijing came under pressure to act on its rogue ally.

 China believes any response "should be prudent, appropriate and conducive to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and avoid the escalation of the situation", foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters in Beijing.

"We express regret at the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's launch in spite of the extensive concerns of the international community," Hong said, using North Korea's formal name and reiterating Beijing's stance following the Wednesday launch.

He said Pyongyang should observe "relevant" resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, adding: "We hope relevant parties will keep calm and jointly maintain the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula."

China is the North's biggest trading partner and aid provider, and is seen as one of the few nations with any influence over its regime. (AFP)

중국, 北 로켓발사에 드디어 입 열었다

북한의 장거리 로켓 발사를 두고 국제사회의 비난이 들끓는 가운데 중국 정부가 목요일 유엔에 '신중한' 대응을 당부했다.
 
중국 외교부 대변인 홍 레이는 베이징에서 열린 기자회견에서 "(북한을 향한) 모든 대응이 신중하고, 적절해야하며 한반도의 평화와 안정에 기여해야 한다. 현 상황의 악화를 막아야 할 것”이라고 말했다.

그는 북한의 정식 국가명을 사용해 "국제사회의 우려에도 불구하고 조선민주주의인민공화국이 로켓을 발사한 것에 대해 유감스럽게 생각한다"며 지난 12일 발사에 대한 베이징의 입장을 고수했다.

그는 또 평양은 유엔 안전보장이사회의 관련 결의안을 준수해야 한다며 "우리는 관련 당사자들이 침착하게 한반도의 평화와 안정을 유지하기 위해 공조하기 바란다"고 덧붙였다. 

한편, 중국은 안보리 이사회에서 규탄 성명에 이의를 제기 하지는 않았지만 추가 제재에는 부정적인 입장을 내놓은 것으로 전해졌다.

중국은 북한의 최대 무역 상대국이자 원조국이다.
