The next-generation storage device, solid-state drive, or SSD, is expected to become more popular next year thanks to its rapidly falling price, a report said.

The report by iSuppli, a U.S.-based market researcher, said the global SSD sales volume in the third quarter of 2012 reached 15.5 million units, a 137 percent increase from the same period last year.

SSDs have better stability and speed compared to conventional hard disk drives. Since these specifications are most important for storage devices, the industry predicts SSDs will replace HDDs in the near future.

Advantages of SSDs including data stability, faster speed, less noise and less heat are getting more attention as ultrabook laptops and tablet PCs have enjoyed a sales boom in recent years.

Along with the strong demand from computer makers, SSD prices have dropped significantly over the past the few months to lure more individual consumers.

Price information on Danawa, one of the most popular Korean online shopping malls for IT devices, shows that an SSD with a 128 GB capacity can be bought for about 120,000 won ($110) as of Wednesday. The price has dropped nearly half from 200,000 won earlier this year.

According to Danawa, the most popular SSD models were produced by Samsung Electronics and Intel Corp. as of the third week of November. Both of these models offer multimillion-byte data transfer speed as well as a three-year warranty.

이러한 SSD의 장점은 최근 몇 년 사이 판매 붐을 일으키고 있는 울트라북과 태블릿PC의 주저장매체로 SSD가 채택되면서 더욱 크게 각광받고 있다.

이처럼 컴퓨터 제조업계의 수요 급증과 더불어 최근 국내 SSD 가격 또한 크게 감소해 컴퓨터 성능을 향상시키고자 하는 개인 소비자들에게도 큰 매력으로 소구하고 있다.

국내 굴지의 IT기기 온라인 쇼핑몰 다나와의 가격정보에 따르면 128기가바이트 용량의 SSD 한 개 가격은 수요일 현재 약 12만원대로 나타나고 있으며, 이는 올해 초 20만원대에서 거의 절반 가까이 떨어진 가격이다.

다나와 기준 현재 국내에서 가장 인기있는 SSD는 삼성전자와 인텔의 제품으로, 빠른 속도는 물론 3년간의 무상보증 기간을 제공하고 있어 신뢰감을 더한다.
